I have a spare blower assembly in my garage I checked, and there's no oil hole for the motor. I doubt lack of oil would cause a whine, although I might be wrong. It's more likely to be a leaf caught against the blades or something.
Did it start doing it all at once?

The early 924's, 944's and 924S's share much of the same heater components.
Give the hole a dose of 3 in 1 and see what happens. Can't hurt.
Still might have to take the motor out and replace the bearings. Porsche used open cage bearings until the 85.5 and later models. The open cage bearing in the front of the cooling fans will cause the armature to sieze up.
