I've been working a little with H&R (they're homebase is here in town) and we may be able to get front coils for the early cars depending on the similarity to the VW A2 chassis.
We're thinking about the early cars. Problem is with the lower mount. Becuse of it's "cupped" design, it won't let us space out to all room for the spring pearch. I think our shock will fit without the pearch, with our adapter bushings. We're working on it.

I dont know much about suspensions just yet so I am wondering what the advantage of coil overs is with just going with a stiffer shock.

Thanks,

Mark

Springs absorb, shocks dampen the springs absorb. More dampen stiffer ride less dampen more bounce in the spring. I think that is right?

The suspension will not be able to operate correctly. If you have a spring at 100# and a super firm shock to dampen that spring the spring will still compress a very long way but it will do it VERY SLOWLY.

Springs control weight transfer by compressing a certain distance.

Shocks control the amount of TIME the spring movement/weight transfer takes.

[f=nx where x is the distance the spring is compressed and n is the spring rate]. Given the same forces exerted on a spring under cornering you increase the rate of the spring to REDUCE spring travel, resulting in less body roll and this maintains better suspension geometry.

Slapping firm shocks on will only DELAY the body roll, not eliminate it...and the worst part is the suspension cannot recover after the shock/spring combo has been compressed - at this point you're riding on the frame and the wheels will not remain in contact with the ground.

Bad idea.

Will we be seeing a pair of front coilovers anytime soon?

I would like to know that as well. It is holding up my purchase of the rears, as I would like to have matching components.

Slevy, might it make sense to buy a set of ground control threaded bodies and work from that. I dont think they are that much (i.e. offset by production gains). I think all we want is a less expensive alternative to the Konis/Ledas/same ol shi*/etc. What challenges, maybe the group could offer up advise. I for one would be happy to help if I can.
