KLA rear coil-overs......initial impressions after install.

You can probably get the shocks re-valved through KLA if you want to run without the torsions. If racecars can remove the torsions and put some serious g's on the suspension without failure, then I think it is pretty safe for a street car. Removing the torsions also allows for quick ride-height adjustments:^)

944Pete has already spoken for the Konis.
Andy, they are stock rear 951 (early offset) calipers/rotors.
G96, they have 140lb springs. I've already re-indexed the t-bars awhile back and the rear eccentric has already been tweaked as far as it will go.
Turbo Tim, I hear what you are saying. But, track cars also don't drive on pot-holes and driveway lips, bumps, etc. That's the difference, I have been told. I'm not really sure. Maybe someone who has some experience with running only coil-overs on a street car can comment....
Daave, my coil-overs were part of the initial pre-order that Scott posted about on here a while back. From the time that I finally got around to sending him my deposit, it only took a couple of weeks.
I think that they are $500something per pair. Check out www.klaindustries.net .

Just was alerted to this thread.....
Tifo-
Glad you like them! I appreciate the kind words. Sounds like install was pretty non-eventful. On the ride height, was your car lowered to begin with? My car (just running torsions) is 13" from the horse on the center cap front/rear so you're pretty close. The car may settle a bit after driving 10 or so miles.

Tifo, now you are seeing the problem I found with lowered cars, think I will cut an inch off them. BTW I got them cracked up just far enough to keep my ride height and I have yet to here any spring noise (for now anyway).

I'm not sure what KLA's official stance is, but I (and others) think that you shouldn't run coil-overs only on a street car. The mounts for the shocks in the rear are not designed to be that much "load-bearing".

I have coilovers on my stang-street driven with no problems I also run Qa1's on it as well. We run coilovers on the midget and you wouldn't believe the bumps etc on the dirt they take and never give in. I wouldn't see any problem using them without bars on the street.

So, umm when can we expect some of these wonders for our pre 85's??
I've been working a little with H&R (they're homebase is here in town) and we may be able to get front coils for the early cars depending on the similarity to the VW A2 chassis.

I'm not sure if I really understand the logic behind the thinking that race use is less abusive than street use. Race use has you putting wheels onto rumble strips/tiger's teeth/checkerboard curbs regularly, going as quickly as you can, as well as sometimes dropping wheels off track and bring them back on track at speed. Street use puts you over curbs, potholes, sure, but you see them coming, and your goal isn't to be fastest regardless, so you slow down for them.
Is the shock of hitting curbing racing or hitting the edge of the pavement coming back on track actually less than hitting a pothole or driveway at lower speed on the street, or, simplified, is track use easier on suspension components than street? I personally don't think so.
Notice I ignored the issue of higher g-loads on the track - quite frankly I don't think that's an issue, as they're constant load, not dynamic peak loads.

On the subject of removing your t-bars. I heard that because of where the shocks mount to the frame it transmits a unpleasant amount of road noise etc. through the car. so it is not recommended for street use purely due to the comfort level. ----I read this on a race car tuners site (Tracey or something Stacey racing...help me out if this sounds familiar)---
