Default Thermostat gasket

I'm trying to replace the thermistat on my 944. I can't seem to figure out how the gasket goes on as I have been sent 2 diffrent Types. The old gasket was a wrap around that went over the thermostat. I received one of those but it does not fit back in. The other gasket looks like it goes on top or behind the thermistat.

Can anyone tell me how the gasket goes on?

Dear Redfogo: There are two gaskets...The small one goes behind the thermostat and pushes down on a flange inside the outlet pipe. the other one goes around the outside of the thermostat and both go down inside the outlet pipe to sit and seal on the little one already inside the water pump. then the snap ring goes in..If the thermostat still moves up and down, you might need a shim to keep it from moving around inside the outlet pipe..You may have to use some force to get the first gasket to seat well, BTW.

Update for anyone else with this problem

My 85 NA has updated turbo-style water pump so it requires the slim gasket that goes around the thermostat. I was sent the wrong gaskets so I was unable to get the thermostat installed.
