Default Rear chassis cross member?

While dropping the rear suspension on my '89 S2 I hit a part that needs to be removed but I can't find it in the PET so I need some help identifying it.

It's directly forward (towards the front of the car) of the torsion tube and it's mounted onto the subframe with four M10x95 bolts. It's about two feet long.

I'm trying to figure out what it does because I need to pull it to get my torque tube out and it doesn't just drop out nicely when I remove the bolts. Before putting a crow bar on it I thought I'd ask if anyone knew what it's supposed to be doing?

Never mind. I gave it a light tap with a rubber mallet, it came right out and the torque tube fell on my head.

Now I'm going to take a brief break, eat some oxycodone and wait for symptoms of a concussion...

I exaggerated a little. I had a jack under the TT so it only dropped about 4 inches when that crossmember came out, but it surprised me and it did give me a good whack on the head.

I consider it a zen lesson.

Sorry for the bump on the head. That would be my excuse for a couple of homebrews, for medicinal purposes only! I think the cross member is just there to help stiffen the body.

Hey, no apologies needed. You've just convinced me that I'm not going to bother pulling the old bearings out of the torque tube before I haul it up to EASY in Emeryville to exchange it for an earlier model.

My guess is I'll still have to pull the bearings though...

The good news is I did get it out. Getting it back in will be interesting. Watch this space for further announcements.
