boxdoc, i think i fixed the problem. one of the wires was not getting good contact, as the nut that secures it was stripped. i really hope that is the problem, as i will be selling the car soon, and dont want to replace any more parts

The day I read this post I walked out from work and my 83 did the exact same thing! This thread is cursed! Beware.....

Anyway, when you said one of the terminals wasn't getting good contact I assume you mean one of the terminals on the starter? Any trick getting to the wiring for the starter? Do you have to pull it out to get to the terminals?
