Default Big Red's or 944S2 Brakes

Where's the best place to purchase a set of "big reds" or 88 944S2 brakes for the front and rear of a 1988 NA? I'll do the conversion myself.

Thanks,

Big Reds are most likely overkill for a 88 NA. 944S2 brakes are the same as 951 brakes. 89 was the first year for the S2.
S2 or 951 brakes are plenty for an NA. They are very powerful and fade free with a good set of pads.
The next step up from there are 928S4 brakes which also may be a little strong for a NA.

Ah. I see. Well, then I agree with Pete. Big Reds still will be overkill. The 928S4 brakes I have on my car are extremely powerful, more than enough brake. Honestly, I think that 951/944S2 brakes, if set up properly, would be enough..........

The nice thing about 915/S2 brakes are that the front and rear calipers use the same brake pads, so you can swap front to rear to increase pad life on a single set of pads. (My fronts wear twice as fast as the rears).

Go with the 951/S2 brake setup, unless you are going to be doing track events. In that case, the 928S4 calipers are great.

One other thing to consider: you may need a different offset wheel in order to fit around big reds or 928S4 calipers, while the 951/S2 calipers should fit fine under your current wheels, if they are still stock.

Are the 944S brakes any better then the regular 944's? Figure I will have to do something in the future. I have yet to get my brakes to lock up, and I have tried. Brake pads have lots of meat left, and the braking power is still good.. And no ABS..

I believe the "S" has the same brakes as the N/A 944.

OK 2 things....

1. there was no S2 in 88... (can't believe no one cought that) it was the S in 87-88 and the S2 from 89-whenever....

2. There is absolutely no difference from the normal N/A to S brakes... they are the same damn thing...

A few things...

- you don't want your brakes to be lock up. It's not any kind of valuable gauge of their ability.

- if you think you need more brake, you can usually get it with a better pad

-S2/951 brakes should be plenty for most if you do need more brake than a better pad can give you.

The M030 versions of the 944S2/951/968 used the same brakes as the 928 S4. These were also used by the 951S ('88 & '89).

The 928 GTS had the (virtually) the same brakes as the "big-reds" on the 993TT. The brakes on the 928 GTS are sometimes known as "big-blacks".

Here's a list of part to upgrade a 944S2 to "big-blacks" :

Earlier 944's will probably need different adaptors to fit these.

I upgraded my 1987 S to 1987 951 brakes.

1. New front spindles
2. 4 1987 944 Turbo Calipers
3. 4 1987 944 Turbo Rotors
4. Your choice of pads.

Works great! And it was cheap. Paid $100 for each spindle and $400 for the set of calipers. I bought the rotors new.
