Question Kumho Ecsta MX vs Yokohama AVS?

I'm due for some new tires and would like to survey those using these two tires as they sem to great tires for the price. I currently have the 712s and would like something a little better.

I've read about them on Tirerack, but would like to hear how they are working on our cars.

I think the early favorite is the MXs because in the Tirerack test, the performed almost as well as the G-force K/Ds....

Thank you for sharing your experiences and opinions.

Daniel

I've had Kumho 711s and various Yokohamas. I'm sold on the Yoks. The Kumhos sucked. I've had Yok, A520s, Paradas, A306s, and now EV100s and all the Yoks I've had have been excellent.

I have Yokohama AVS on the 914. They are nice from what I can tell. I need to replace my front tires soon and I'll probably go for those again.

Running Yok AVS ES100s. Must give an excellent review... as to the Kuhmos, a friend of mine has Ecsta Supras on his teg - they do pretty well in the dry, yet when it rains don't expect to maintain much traction.

Cheers,
Sach

Yoko AVS - 225/45/17 & 255/40/17 - excellent in wet and dry. Also appears to perform and hold up better on DE events than kuhmos compared to other 951S

Thank you. I hear nothing but good about the Yoko AVS.

Anyone using the Kumho MXs?

Have you checked pricing? Discount Tire and Tirerack have pretty good deals, but I usually check local shops with these prices in hand and get close to the best deals this way. Just priced new ES100 Yoko's for the 968 Cab (225/45/17 & 255/40/17) and the delivered price for all 4 tires from Tirerack is $430, and $480 at Discount tire - mounted, balanced, all taxes paid. So for the extra $50 that is a lot of service. Plus the salesman at Discount said to get back to him with my best price and they will do something!

i've had the MXes for about two months now. before these i had the kumho 712s. compared to those, these are notably better. specifically in dry road handling though. They definitely stick to the pavement better but i think the water treading ability of the 712s was a bit better. but i mean, these still tread water very well. i drove 40 minutes in a killer storm today actually and they definitely held their own. I'm very satisfied with the ecsta MXes so far, i plan on autocrossing them in the next month or so to really put them to the test. don't know how well they'd stack compared to the yokos though, i'm sure the yoko owners aren't complaining either tho

I highly recommend the dry handling of the Kumho MX. It is also relatively quiet and smooth for such a stiff sticky tire and a decent wet weather tire. Only negative is I wouldn't expect much tread life, especially since it only starts with 8/32" of tread.

I have Avs intermediate 225/50/15 ,they have proved to perform quite well, dry grip is great, wet is very good. They did need about 4-5 k wear in to get rid of some side flex , now I would reccommend them.Great for the price I think I paid 68 per tire tire rack close out.

I have Yokohama AVS ES 100s. The tire's grip is amazing, there has yet to be a turn I couldn't pull (and I drive fast when it's late and there's no one around). However, the tires are a bit "jumpy"...they tend to hop around on bumpy / badly paved roads. Part of it is the fact that the car is rear-wheel drive, but you really have to grip the wheel and anticipate the road, where as on other tires (like my Blizzaks for the winter) it's not as pronounced. Anyone else notice this? I've heard a few other people say the same thing. But on smooth roads, they are great tires.

I've got the MXs. The only thing I don't like about them is that they don't have a 245/45/16 size, so I have to run 225s at all corners. I might try the yokos next just to run the bigger rear tires.
If you can get falken azenis sport tires in your size, get them. They're the best street tire I've ever seen or driven. Unfortunately, they don't have much sizing selection.

I've actually heard from a few of my autoX and road track friends that the MX will outperform the Azenis on anything but a first run or second run...the MX lasts significantly longer, and offers grip comparable to an R compound. This is all heresay, I made the AWFUL mistake of getting sold into Toyo Proxes for cheap, and I regret the decision everyday. I try to puncture them to justify going with the MXs that I originally wanted but which weren't in stock at the time. Even the cruddy Falken's on the rear tires (255s) don't squeal or bark as much as the 215 Toyos on the fronts. I will NEVER buy Toyos again.
I always found Yoko to be the WORST for longevity period. I ran AVS intermediates on a number of cars in a number of sizes and in the FL heat, found I'd be lucky to get rears to last 5k miles, and the fronts might go 7500 or so...they stick like hell, and are cheap, but since many sizes are no longer in production I'd go MX for budget and stickiness from all reviews I've read and been told by friends.
