im in the process of a florida relocation now, been down here for about two months. its pretty cheap to get cars into the state now that the impact fee is gone (was ~$300 per car!). no emissions or safety inspection... so a test pipe is going on once i get the car down here. i'm pretty sure its illegal to mess w/ or remove the cat but im sure the cops have gotten enough "i bought the car that way" excuses to figure its a lost cause. i heard that they have safety check points (kinda like DUI checkpoints) where they'll check tread depth, blinkers, horn...and what not and ticket you if your failing but i have yet to see one. all in all its a nice state...much different than what im use to but i'm happy w/ my decision of coming here.

i'm also plan on throughing a gtg once i buy a house, which at the rate im going (house hunting wise) it wont be til late this year.

if your planning on spending 1500 to transport your car keep in mind you can buy a buy a flat bed trailer for about that much. i'd be doing that myself....if i only had a tow vehicle heheh.

buy a flatbed trailer from home depot and sell it when you get there or take it back, keep your receipt! Is any body from destin, going down in sept.though can't take the car. Any after market shops down that way or good Porsche recyclers? Any good night spots?

I think I'm going to look for a used trailer.

Sell it when I get to Fl.

I noticed that U-Haul rents trailers but they say that the 944 will not be able to make it up the ramp. Any tried to use one?

Uhaul car hauler works great. Picked up my 84 on one. All you do is jack up the front of the trailer in the air so it makes the ramp incline more 944 friendly.

My dad used a U-haul to pick up my brother's 944. It worked, but you have to use boards in addition to the ramps to ease the incline. Get some 6 foot long 2x6s or so and it should be ok, assuming the car is at the stock ride height.

Will the guys at Uhaul give me a hard time about renting it.

Or do I just lie and say I'm towing something else?

Let me know when you have a get to together. I live in the Fort Lauderdale area. I came down from Boston.I don't miss the winters nor the emissions testing at all. Lately, i've been a little touchy about calling my car a smoker :-)

My favorite parts falling off sighting was in Fl. I was on 95 Northbound heading from St Augustine towards Jax when the drivers side front fender flew completely off of a Datsun 240Z- Went about 25 feet in the air at 65Mph and fell into the median. It was completely rusted out..

I'm guessing it was a transported New Yorker! j/k

chris:

thats hilarious! its crazy the beaters people get away with driving around down here. sometimes i see guys with old rusted out trucks getting stopped. they're lawn maint. people and they have these old rusted out beater trucks, FULL past the top of the cab with tree stuff, riding on the suspension stops in rear, just plugging along. i'll tell you, on some points i'd love to see more regulation to keep crap like that off the road. on the other hand, then they'd wanna start regulating my crap too. forget that. i say, keep your distance from the bluehairs and rustbuckets, and you'll be fine. florida's been kind to my three cars, however lesser made autos seem to suffer a bit.

Seriously no inspections? Didn't they have inspection based on what county you lived in not too long ago? I am almost 100% sure my folks used to have to get their cars inspected to get tags. I know it didn't cover the whole state, but I thought there were at least a half dozen counties where inspections where required, like around Miami, Palm Beach and Jacksonville or Tampa or something.

Florida sucks: no twisties/elevation changes.

And then there's that humidity.
