Rusted battery tray
I will be going this weekend to look at a 84 that is a orphan. The guy that has the car, along with about 15 other types out in a field, told me that the battery tray is rusted. I'm assuming he means that it is rusted out. What have you guys done to fix rusted battery boxes. None of my cars has had this problem, there for I have no experience with it. My 84 had a little surface rust, so I saned it out, primed, and repainted. If it is rusted through, can it be cut out and a new or donor welded back in. It also has the dreaded oil cooler seals gone problem. That is a nasty job.

Todd ;you can weld a pc in but that is likely to cause a fire without rmoving half the world out of the way. Most guys grind the rot out and then fiber glass patch it. This works well and is probably pretty cost effective. A little paint and your problem is over. The only problem I can see after it is done is the battery hold down clamp bolt. Fortunately your ecu is under the steering coluum not on the pass floor.

Glass is probably a better choice anyway, since it will never again rust. A good idea is to put in a drain spout on the bottom and run a plastic line out of the car to vent the overflow out of the car, we do this on aircraft to prevent the acid from destroying the aluminum.

Thanks for the info guys. Hay sharky, I have a 87 S also. I bought the car with a bad motor. It dropped a valve in the back cylinder and busted the top of the piston and cracked the block. I'm going to get the head repaired, and use a n/a block.
