Default Engine overheating/smoking!!

Hey all. Its been doing this for a while. My engine overheats almost right away (after just driving out of my neighborhood). The light comes on, and smoke starts to come out from under the engine on the passenger side.

First I thought it was due to faulty hoses. I checked the hoses and realized that two of them had small holes in them, so there was no pressure buildup in the cooling system. I replaced them and all seemed fine for about 2 weeks.

Today it started to overheat and smoke again. My coolant reservior is full, the hoses have pressure, and the fan is spinning.

My next guess is the waterpump or thermostat. What do you think?

The smoking ( if it's oil smoke and not water vapor) and the overheating issue are probably not related. You might have an oil leak onto an exhaust component and another issue with your cooling system.

What does you engine temp gauge say when the light somes on?

engine temp gauge is in the red. i run the defroster, but the defroster only blows hot when i give it gas...but the gauge goes down a bit, but come back up again.

it seems like it heat up when idling but gets lower again while driving.

for the record i've had the waterpump & thermo changed a year and a half ago

could the smoking have to do with the oil system? i change it pretty regularly

sounds like a headgasket. That would explane the smoke, and quick overheating.

Are you still losing coolant, or can you tell? How did you discover you had holes in two hoses? Had you been running without coolant at all?

What does the smoke smell like? If it is a sweet (coolant) smell than you are def. leaking coolant onto something hot and the speculation about it being a headgasket is plausible.

If the smoke smells a little like burnt rubber then it probably is oil that is smoking up- that could be a leaking cam tower, oil pan or seals or any/all of the above.

I"m not losing coolant anymore. I was loosing coolant before and I traced it to a hole in the bypass hose. The hole was visible that's how i could tell. I replaced it and it ran fine for about a month, then leaked again. I traced it to the hose that goes from the bypass hose into the cockpit of the car (i don't know the name of the hose) so i replaced that. so now i'm not leaking anymore, but its still overheats...weird

Did you bleed the cooling system?

Also check your coolant reservoir cap...if it's not holding pressure the cooling system will not be as efficient.

The cap is holding pressure fine. We bleeded (bled?) the cooling system at the beginning of summer.

Bled. Couldn't hurt to do it again. The fact that it overheats so quickly is weird.

How about you take it to a mechanic and he'll tell you what's wrong.

Is check your hoses is one hot and some merely warm. Here in Florida, I tend to have to replace my thermostat once every two years. Its weird. The fans will come on and my guage will show hot fairly quickly. Real PITA to get to and pull out.. However, my car doesn't smoke
