Well, figure out the price of the part of what he says is wrong with the car. Add a hundred bucks to that price. Subtract that from what you're going to offer him. I'm not sure how much the car itself is worth but id say around 10 or 11k in good shape.

Woops its an '86 lower what i said by 2k. This is all depending on service records and such and overall condition of the vehicle.

Just curious as to why you think that the MY 86 should be 2K less than an 87 non S? There are some real advantages to the 86.........lighter weight, Non-airbag (do you really want old Porsche wiring hooked up to small explosives in your face?), Forged internals and most of all FUCHS. The only advantage of the 87 or newer in my mind is the belt tensioner but that can be retrofitted and may indeed be no advantage at all.

In the end I prefer the 86's.

Generally an older car is worth less in the public eye. It's like saying why is my 83 944 worth less than a '91 944, I like my 83 better than the '91s so it must be worth more.

89 is an S
88 could be an S

S's are better than non-S's unless you plan on modifying. If you're gonna modify then the S parts will probably be wasted on you.

Let's see, someone correct me if I miss some things, in 87 the 951's got ABS, late wheel offsets, airbags. In 88 they got the same stuff but an S option which brought bigger brakes, turbo, swaybars plus different wheels. In 89 the S option became standard.

86 cars had early offsets which make it harder to fit wheels but also allows the highly desirable FUCH wheels (read lighter). Was also lighter due to no ABS and Airbags. Also had forged internals for more rigidity and again less weight.

I know I'm missing something else on the 87-newer cars but it escapes me right now.

I'll give you that on 2-10 year old cars but were talking at the oldest 17 years old to the newest US car being 14 years old. And to say knock 2K for it being an 86 versus another year, albeit an 87 or 88 just isn't so. Now if you're comparing it to a 89 or 88S then I'll spot you 2K plus some.

One other point, the REAL determining factor of these cars is what kind of shape are they currently in rather than what year they were made. A pristine documented no-leak 86 should fetch more than a 87 or 88 in average shape.

The "public eye" will never see these cars being worth very much at all. It's the few that realize their potential that keep them going.

Forgive me for saying "back that truck up" but I prefer the 86 over the other non-S's.

Agent, to get back to your original question is a little difficult. Check out the Autotrader ads and pay close attention to those in California. The market for these cars fluctuates and is definitely area specific. Give some more details about the car and I'm sure we can get you some answers. I'll look in Excellence for the latest market report but it was something like $6K to $10K for decent to excellent 86 951's.

87 had the improved exhaust manifolds, I think.

I like the light feel of the 86's also, but am happy with ye olde 88 model.

Yikes. If someone offered me 6-7K for it, I would think they are smoking the funny weed. The economy is down a little, but this isnt the Great Depression. I think 10-11K is easily a reasonable price for the above car if its straight and true.

Wasnt it 944Pete that just sold his nice 85-86 944NA for $4000. Criminy. The consensus here was whoever got that car was getting a good deal (and they were).

you've got me scared about my airbags now--they're on an 87, driver and passenger, and i'm sure they haven't been serviced since the 60k one at the dealer many years back....

should i be worried?
