Default PPI in Houston

Where (in Houston) should I go to get a PPI done and how much does it typically cost. I thought I could do it at the local Porsche dealer but to my surprise, they don't do it.

Yep.

And since Keith's dad is in the hospital, I'll put a Yep in here for him too.

I just talked to ProTechnik and they quoted me $500 for a PPI. I thought they were cheaper than that.

WOW,,,

I was just over there 2 weeks ago, I could swear they said it was like 200.00 and I thought THAT was high!!!!

I ended up just buying an hour of his "time" @ 80.00 We looked around and found some stuff, not much of anything I didn't already know (I've had it for 8 months).

What the heck do they do for 500.00???????

Do a search on "PPI" I remember a thread about what people paid around the country.

There are a number of shops in Houston capable of doing a PPI for you. Pro Tecknik is expensive. Let me know if you need names and I will try to get them for you. You could contact your local PCA chapter as they are very active and they would know who to take it to. If memory serves me there are 3 shops in Stafford alone that can do it.

I would not use pro-technik. the shop is primarily concerned with their racecars. i would use "eurocar-werk" on gulfton over on the west side of the loop 610. they charged me $100 back in 1999 for a ppi on my 951. there is also the "swiss garage" on the north side of houston but i never used them.

eric is the guy i dealt with at eurocar-werk - if he is still there tell him i said hi.

I would agree with the racing part of the above statement. Better said they have much more expensive and higher gross work to do than PPI's. The do incredible work on race cars though and they used to rebuild late control arms for somewhere in the 130 dollar range.

While I know that Advantage does not do "PPI's" Call them, ask for Mike Yale. See if they can "look the car over for you" I'm sure they'll charge, I think it's the "assurance" factor that they don't want to be held accountable should something "bad" happen after they've looked at it.

PPI = Pre Purchase Inspection

or (in my case, 8 months after buying ) Post Purchase Inspection

Wow,

$500 is too much. That's their way of saying they don't want to do it.

Eric is still at Eurocar, (713)661-6428. He's very capable in most matters, but I don't rely on him exclusively. If he gets the feeling you are, he starts looking at you like a blank check.

These guys advertise in the local PCA newsletter:

Rennsport (979)885-7304
(I've heard great things about these guys, no experience though)

Koby Motors (713)784-8937
(ditto)

Swiss Garage (713)626-9320
(ditto)

Lawell Motorsports (713)871-1040
(Terry Lawell is a good guy, knows his stuff. He does Ferarri work the dealer in Houston doesn't want to touch, like an engine replacement in a Mondial. He will not overcharge you. His shop is not much more than a little shack, though.)

Hope that gives you some ideas.

Try Viking Motorsport. They are located in Stafford, just off 59 South (towards Sugarland) a mile south of beltway 8 (same complex as Pro-Tecnic). Viking and his wrench Chris know 944s exceptionally well (they both own one), and are extremely thorough and trustworthy. They did some work on the 951 racecar I used to have, and I was very happy with them. I would think their charge for a ppi would be <$200, as they know the 944s so well they can very quickly spot any problem spots (since they already know where the weak points typically are)

Viking was the DE chair for the local PCA club, and is an overall great guy.

Pro-tecnic is awesome, but they do the best work on their customers' cars who have $50-100k per year budgets. It is not, IMHO the optimal place for a PPI unless you already have an existing relationship with Sam.

Viking Motorsports, 13003 Murphy Rd, Suite N, Stafford, TX - (281) 498 1001

For what its worth, I have heard some not-so-complimentary things said about Swiss Garage from ex-customers of theirs (I've never been there, though), and I would rate Viking above Eurocar-werks.

PS to Kevin - I like your power reference in your sig......everyone used to think texas was crazy for being linked to the rest of the power grid only through DC ties to stay away from the domino effect from other state's grids. Now it don't look so silly, huh? Are you in the power biz too??

Viking also was terrific in providing a transport from TWS to baytown to an RX-7 owner who deleloped a big oil leak at the track this weekend. A very nice guy he was the DE steward this weekend. Even let us borrow his umbrella to use for shade. These shops all compete with each other and I didnt get a sense of friendliness between them. I think you would be happy with any of them but 500 bucks is just too much. For that matter bring it over this weekend and let us look at it as there will be 5 or more p-car guys in the Houston area. Might check with Kevin to see if that is cool with him, since it is his house :>) We could certainly do a once over but I doubt anyone has a compression gauge.
