Default How do I adjust this?

Ok, I got under the dash and was checking the play in my clutch pedal. I pulled the little rubber booty back that covers some of the linkage down there and I noticed what looks like a rod that goes into the firewall into some type of cupped receiver. This Rod has a lot of play in it. I can wiggle it around easily. I can push the pedal in about one inch before the rod hits the piece in the firewall and all the slack is taken up.

I noticed a larger nut on the back of the pedal assembly that has threads going through it to some sort of collar. There are threads that come out of the other side that same collar and go to the rod I spoke about above.

I'm assuming that the slack I'm talking about isn't suppose to be there. If this is true what is the adjustment procedure?
