Default Questions about the 86 951

I'm looking at an 86 951. What can you tell me about it? Yes, it's a broad question, but I am a sponge.

86, the first year for the 951 and is also somewhat a unique car as far as some parts. There is quite a bit of parts on the car that only 86 parts will fit, narrowing your options in finding used parts. They had an O-ring in the balance shaft houing for the turbo oil supply that is known to swell and limit oil to the turbo. If you ever do rear balnce seals, replace it!Not trying to scare you, just givin the heads up. I'd say it should be a good car either way.

86 951,,well, they are the lightest of the bunch, they have a different offset to the later cars due to ABS being offered for the 87 cars and newer, I believe different control arms than the later cars, slightly smaller bearings on the CV joints, but they have forged rods - all other years have cast.....BUT...

They brought into the US more 86's than the total of 87, 88, and 89 models all together. Part are readily available and 90% of the parts are shared with the other years,,maybe more. Stock 86, 217hp, 230 torque. If you want to mod a car then 86, 87, or 88 non-S. 86's on a whole, will be a few dollars cheaper than the other years too.

All US spec '86 cars had the tranny oil cooler ..?
Speedo doesn't go as far as in the later models...
Exhaust manifold is probably the early design if it hasn't been replaced...

I'd say the differencies between '86 and '87-'88 951s are pretty minimal, the offset thing is probably the biggest issue.

The 86 951 is the most desirable year for me. I like the early offset (can use Fuchs) and forged rods. Plus the simplicity of no airbags and no ABS.

I have been on the lookout for a "good" 86 951 at a decent price for the last 6 months. Ski is right, they are plentiful. It's difficult, however, to find one that doesn't have a ton of miles on it and hasn't been beaten, at a decent price. Most people that truly have a nice example of an 86 know what they have and price them accordingly.......

Tifo,

The one I'm looking at has 187,xxx miles, good paint, polished Fuchs, and looks like a good all around car; and it's fast as hell!

Asking price: $4500
What I can get it for, I think: $4000

If it checks out good, then I'm in.

Wow, sounds good. The mileage is a little high, but if it has been taken care of, that may be a keeper. The price is certainly enticing. What color? Red? With Black partial leather interior? That was the most common color that year, I think.

Stone Mountain, eh? I was there a few years back. I visited it when I was racing at the MTB world cup event in Conyers. Interesting town.

Hmm, let's see. I know you won't sell your 85 1/2 so if you find one you must be:
A. Parking the 85 1/2 outside.
B. Parking the 951 outside.
C. Having Renee park outside.
D. Adding on to the garage.

So, when will you start on the garage?

Well, as soon as I buy the car, of course!

Ya never know, I may just sell my 85.5.

Hold on! The era isn't necessarily over yet! I was just a casual, passing thought. Let me go home and add up all of my receipts, then look at the book value of the car in the latest Excellence. That will change my mind real fast........... She's a keeper.

Don't even think of selling that car. Find a wrecked 951 and let's do a heart transplant.
