Default Chip worth it in NA?

I've heard that installing a chip is only worthwhile when done on a turbo. I have an NA and was thinking of getting some performance upgrades. Will spending $200-$300 on a chip be worth it?

No, not really. If you are looking for high horse power, then a turbo is about the only way to get there.

in short - no. lots of $ for little power gain. use your $ to do a DE or upgrade your suspension or both.

or give it to me so i can get a helmet for DE

The chip would immediately lessen the value of your car for resale to anyone who didn't want to put in their car. I'm a bit of a stickler, but I won't buy a car with a chip in it unless I know exactly where the chip is from and exactly what it's doing to the engine. Porsche, while not perfect, has a good idea about what they're doing.

With an NA the best perfomance mods are:
1. The driver
2. Get the car in top stock condition
3. Suspension
4. Top quality brake fluid and tranny gear oil
5. Brakes
6. The driver

The chip just moves the redline up a little and fattens the fuel curve. It may be 5hp or so and that's all. There are better places to spend $200.

Has anyone had a custom chip burned for an NA? I'm leaning towards the FR Wilk chip because it's really my only option but I was thinking maybe I could pay a shop to tune me a custom chip like they do with turbos. I know it will cost alot but if the gains were there it would be worth it.

Call Markus Blazak.

His chips are around $100-150 CANADIAN (a lot less than $200 American)and they not only raise the redline, but the add low-end torque.

He may also be able to do custom chips, I never asked.

Here is his info....

I run a chip in my car. I bought it from a lister for $75. No problems! Everytime I take it out and put the factory chip back...I quickly remove the factory chip and install the aftermarket. If it's only 5hp...you can still tell! Plus the car revs more freely with it. Just my .02.

Very easy to install. The computer is below the steering colum under the dash...4 10mm bolts hold it in. Be careful when you take apart the computer and besure not to bang around the injector drivers, or else!!!!

Cars before 1985 do not have removable chips.

Strictly speaking, the pre '85 cars that have removable chips are those that have been modified to have them.

Although it's a relatively small improvement, it does make a difference.

FR Wilk makes a conversion kit for the early cars so that you may use an aftermarket chip. It is $75 last time I checked.

I've been running the Autothority chip for a few years now and have been very happy with it. I now run race gas and have a custom chip from Danno at GURU Racing.
