Default New starter: still won't start

My starter went on my 84 944, only way I could start the car was by push starting it. Installed a re manufactured starter from a turbo 944, now the car cranks but still won't start. With the old starter, it wouldn't crank at all. Would it be possible that I mixed up a wire on the solenoid? I don't think I did that since the starter is working. What would prevent it from starting it? It cranks fine now just won't fire up. Thanks in advance

If it cranks, you're halfway there!

Does your tachometer bounce when cranking?

Try jiggling the reference wires at the back of the engine near the firewall.

If it cranks, the problem is not with the starter or the solenoid...sounds like that circuit is OK. Thanks, Tiger 03447

+1. The starter cables on mine run right by the reference sensor, if you pushed them around while you were replacing the starter they could have put some force on the sensor or the wires. If it's old, the sensors can get brittle and it doesn't take much to break them. It's easy enough to check. The sensors are on top of flywheel housing behind the intake, a little closer to the driver's side about 2 or 3 inches forward of the fire wall.
