Default counter balancers

I was talking to a few guys that race 944's in my area...

I told them about my problem with the counter balencer covers not fitting and what not....their reply is that they dont run them....they said they have them in but dont hook them up cause if the engine is balanced, then they are not needed

was wondering if it is true that a balanced engine doesnt need the balancers....

thanks,
space

Well at higher RPM's the balance shafts are not "critical". They are more to offset vibrations at normal everyday use. Another reason to not use them in a race motor is that while the "use" is minimal, they do drain horsepower. That said, if you can deal with a little vibration, need ever bit of useable horsepower oh yeah and if you are not concerned with your engine shaking the mounts off, then disconnect those pesky balance shafts.
