I too use 1st or 2nd AND the brake.. nobody has mentioned the BEST reason to use the E-brake.. to keep it working! A un-used e-brake is a great candidate to seize up.

Same as Perry- the old Corvette thing.. You have to get used to Reverse and e-brake. It's just habit.

This is true, but I leave the parking brake on AND leave it in gear.

When i park my 924S i put it in neutral, set parking brake, the car roll backwards or fowards so the brake locks, and then put it in park. Of course though i have an automatic transmission =-). My E-brake only holds the car if i pull up i believe 5 clicks.

My '68 Mustang is a 3-speed manual, i havent gotten around to ever fixing the parking brake on it. I just leave it in 1st or reverse depending on how i am parked and try to never park it anywhere thier is a incline.

I had a Tbird Turbo Coupe that I used to park on an inclined driveway. I used to let it roll back and push the parking brake until the car stopped rolling back. I figured if there was enough braking force to stop the car, it would hold for good (static vs dynamic coefficients of friction). I would then put the car in gear.

One day I forgot to put the car in gear after going through this procedure. I was summoned by my neighbor an hour later to come get my car off his brand new (bought that day) Taurus wagon which I was happy to do.

The moral of the story is two fold. One, warm brakes hold well enough but then they cool off, and two, put it in gear no matter what because that is the question the insurance appeals board judge will ask you when you are trying to get out of the 6 points they have hit you with for the next six years (Massachusetts thing) even though you hadn't driven the car for over an hour when the accident occured.

I always use both and 1st gear or reverse. Reverse is better though since its the lowest gear in the car and would hold the best. It is the same reason why my L82 4 spd vette requires you to put it in reverse before you can remove key from ignition. They do it for a reason!
