Question Clunking in Rear Axle-Need Ideas

After I drive about 5-10 minutes I get a continual clunking in the driver's side rear. I put her on a lift and it seems to be coming from the outboard rear axle where the shaft extension goes through the brace. I injected some lube which helped a little (very little).

Any ideas? TIA

Replacing both real axles should only cost around $250 if you do it yourself. I had the mechanic do it when he did my belts and water pump because he said he would only charge labor for an hour and a half. Total came to $358.73.

Not sure if it is the CVs making noise, but whatever it is, if it is the rear axles you do not have to worry about a huge expense.

If it's the rear axle alone - sometimes you can extend the life of the current axle for a grand total of $0 by removing the axle and swapping ends. Causes the axle to load the bearings a little differently. I've had this trick work for me a couple of times, YMMV. The driver's axle always goes south first due to exhaust heat. Regards Al
