Question '79 924 Timing question

Do the the Audi equipped 924's have an interference engine? Do they have auto or manually set tensioners? What is the horsepower for the manual tranny version? Will I ever stop asking questions?

1) Turbos do have interference engines, NA don't (which always seemed odd to me)
2) Basically, manually set tension on the belt - but nowhere near the legendary stress-inducing issue as a 951, it seems...
3) for nonturbos, if memory serves: 95 hp for the early 77, 115 for later cars, 125 for Euros
4) only time will tell...

The 924 turbo does not have interference motor as i recall. It's basically the same as the N/A but with lower compression (8 vs. 10.5), and of course a turbo.

My friends 924 broke the belt the other day. He just pulled to the side of the road. Get himself a new belt ($8). Took half an our to change.

The 924 Turbo engine is an interference design. The head is quite different than the NA cars', creting the interference. Go to 924.org and click on the 931 Tech forum, do a search on "interference" - all the info you could ever need and more is there...

But yes, it is of course a lower compression engine than the 924NA, which always struck me as odd - I would have thought when LOWERING the compression Porsche could have avoided the interference concept, which I think is one of the biggest flaws in many engines. Regards Al
