Cable issues
Hi all
While stripping things back around and under the inlet manifold, I have discovered I have melted, split and hardened cables in some areas.
Looks like another job I was not expecting but something we just have to be used to with cars of this age.
I guess I will just get some more automotive cable that is rated for engine compartments. Probably best to shield it all too in some kind of insulation and re-route it as best possible away from the head, as in not laying directly on it.
Maybe able to do something similar to the fuel lines which need replacing.
Cheers

Very common issue on German cars. They used really lousy wiring insulation in some spots. Take care of the alternator cable to the starter and the starter solenoid wires asap as their insulation is known to fall off which will cause the starter to engage all by itself.

Thanks guys. Your replies are most appreciated.
I was thinking heat shrink. Some cables, mainly the one that feeds down to the oil pressure sensor (I think - as it is on the side of the oil cooler) have been quite damaged to the point they snap they are so brittle. I may need to replace a few. In these instances I would aim to cut out the damaged area and splice it in, solder it and heat shrink.
Will check the starter wires as that sounds worrying. Good time to check it as I have a flywheel lock in.
Thanks again.
