I am removing the tranny from my 86 951, and I have everything off, but the coupler that connects the driveshaft to the transmission will not come off. We have two big guys with crowbars, a hammer, everything, but we can not get this damn coupler off. Is there a trick I am missing? (yes, both screws are off the coupler) Do I push it onto the transmission or onto the driveshaft? Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Thanks,

ARE ALL the bell housing bolts still tight? If thay are not, you will need to bolt up the trans again, if you loosen them first you put the coupler in a bind. The coupler will slide towards the transmission, About the only thing that could be holding it up would be rust on the shaft, you might try soaking it in a penetrating oil.
Good luck Mark T.

Mark,
Thanks, i actually forgot about the coupler and took the bolts to the bell housing off before I got to it. I just put in two of the bolts to hold it together. Tomorow I will put in the other two and tighten them up. Hopefully thats it. Ive dropped a tranny out of a 944 before and I know I didnt have this much trouble. Thanks again for the speedy response.

when i did it, my coupler was pretty stuck. i poked a screwdriver through the inspection hole and hammered at the coupler until it was all the way at the tranny.

Yes, replacing a couple of housing bolts will fix the problem - just a few degrees of runout so to speak combined with the weight of the assembly will lock it up good...
