Sputtering after a car-wash??

Christian, isn't the Gunk product harmful to the rubber/plastic components? I've heard it's a bit caustic? I prefer gentle grease-cutting detergent to loosen the grime and quickly rinsing it out. Then lots of elbow grease to wipe the stuff off.
A neat trick Perry passed on to us is plain WD-40 on the clean, dry engine components for a nice finishing touch. Looks really nice without the Armor All shine.

Thanks for the tip Christian. I need to do it at the carwash place though because if I get all the sludge on the driveway the wife will go nuclear.

As a matter of fact GUNK has two engine products Engine degreaser and Engine foamy brite. Gunk engine degreases is extremely caustic and will eat through rubber. Gunk engine foamy brite was produced specifically for the purpose of detailing engines and is rubber friendly.

Last summer a friend who is into aircraft offered to clean my engine compartment with a "secret" formula.....he had the car for about 4 hours and called me to pick it up.....when I started it, it missed like crazy....just drove it back (less than a mile) missing the whole way...of course I drove it very easy.....lifted the hood for about 3 hours in the sun and it still missed alittle.....I just let it idle a while and it then smoothed out......looks great, though

Be sure to check the passengers foot well for moisture and signs water (from battery acid damage). Moisture in this area can get into the DME box and cause starting problems. --Roy--

The most important thing to do after cleaning an engine is to let it warm up to operating temperatures immediately after washing it. Also make sure that the engine is relatively cool before you wash it so that you don't crack an exhuast manifold.

Thing is, I didn't clean the engine at all! I just sprayed water into the wheel wells, to clean the mud out. Could be the DME got wet. I'll check the footwell tonight. I did vacuum there last night, and didn't see any damp spots.
