Default Help! Locked-up ebrake

My left rear wheel locked up today while driving, thankfully very slowly. The handbrake lever was buried into the carpeting. I was able to back up and release the brake. I've been unable to see anything broken with the wheel and rotor removed, the brakes separate when I pull up the handbrake lever. The cable seems intact. I can't see anything broken, but haven't yet taken it all apart.

Any ideas??

Thanks,
John

At least on the 968 (and I assume it is true for earlier versions) one of the springs in the hand brake mechanism can fail and allow a shoe to lock up the hub. I recently replaced all the springs in mine as a preemptive effort.

If nothing is broken, I also had a lot of rust/debris in mine when I took it apart. Could be as simple as a piece getting wedged in between the hub and one of the shoes.

Just to be sure it isn't locked up due to a failed part, back up the car and slowly apply the parking brake. If it rolls and then releases, it's probably loaded up with brake dust. Anything else could be failed springs, retainers or the shoes themselves falling apart.
