Default 944 Fiberglass Hood???

Ok campers, I am doing some market research if you want to call it that.

WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH THE PRICES ON FIBERGLASS PARTS FOR THE 944?????

How is it If I own a Mustang or even a Vette I can get all kinds of pieces for half the price of pieces for the Porsche. Just looking at the Mustang I can get everything from a Cobra RR Hood for 200-300 to a 1 piece front end for 500, but a stock hood for the 944 is 450 or more, even if all I want is just a lift off race hood.

I Mean come on, its not like the parts are coming from Porsche or something and they sure aren’t Porsche endorsed, they are simply reproductions and at that their isn’t something special about the 944 hood, its very very basic.

OK Bottom line here. I have had it I want the pieces, but I am not paying those crazy prices.

I got one Ace in the hole, my buddy has been in the Automotive Fiberglass business for 30+ years and his shop staff have over 50 years of combined experience doing everything from complete bodies to hoods, fenders, bumpers, scoop, you name it.

He is telling me there is no reason a Lift off Hood should be more than 285-300. Anyone charging more is ripping someone off. And he is talking new, handlaid, gell coated reinforced, quality pieces... so what gives??

OK yea I know that’s a great price, but no one is selling them for that and the closest I have seen is Ebay and then the parts where used, old and still expensive.

So lets here it, what does everyone think??? Speak up.

I just don’t get it how can a lift off hood that requires hood pins, just a hood skin be 450.00?????

Yea Nine-44 I know Porsche.... but the people making the parts are not porsche they are various aftermarket fiberglass companies... its just sad

I am telling you about about his close <___> to having a my friend's shop do up a mold and have my own stuff made....errrr.... of course the mold and the one hood would proably cost me more than buying a hood... but then atleast I wouldnt be filling someone elses pocket and I could always have another made when ever I needed.... its just plain irritating...

I mean I can get over the cost of engine, drivetrain, electrical etc... Porsche factory parts... but aftermarket fiberglass.... its just a burr under my skin....

I should go into buisness and sell them on ebay or something... it just isnt right paying 450 for a hood that still needs hood pins... I bet I could get a a hood made that uses the factory hardware for a hundred less if I had the mold...

I would not pay over 200 for a fiber glass, lift off, hood. 350 if painted or carbon fiber

I wish I could find one at that price, 200 would be great, but just isnt out their, unless its used... Even GT Racing wants 350.99 for a Hood Skin.

Hey if you like what you got then be happy, its proably money well spent. IMHO

I just dont like the idea of paying even close to that would rather spend the money on other things.

Well, if the molds will cost the same as of one of these overpriced ones, then make the mold and sell your reasonable priced ones. You KNOW they'll move if they are half the price and equall quality. There's a market here.

HEY PEOPLE IF YOU STOP IN atleast post what you would pay for a fiberglass hood, how you feel about the prices whatever.

Would you rather have a lift off, or would you rather have the use of hinges and the latch, etc...

What would either be worth to you.
Surely I am not the only one fired up about these prices.

Shouldn't cost more than 300 bucks to hand lay one.

Just remove your hood, wax it with releasing wax, spray 5mils of gelcoat on it and lay 3 layers of 8 oz matt and you have a mold.. then do the opposite (lay into the mold) to make a hood.. Shouldn't take more than 5-6 hours even for an amateur

You know I just might. I know their is a Market, but its not my thing, though I suppose I could make it my thing or a side thing or something (hehe) I am no expert but surely my friend is right 450 is robbery, they should be in that 300 range maybe 350 with the fittings to use the hinges and latch... Then again maybe I am wrong... maybe 450 is a fair price...

Maybe just maybe someone out their know where to get a lift off or full hood for under 400 dollars, just makes me sick when I can look at a fully function Hood for a Mustang, Camaro, Honda, whatever and they are under 400 and most are under 300.

I'm happy with my choice, a fairly unique nose with my home vented nose pan and a nice bolt-on CF hood.

Yea see there you go, I am familar with the process, but I wouldnt be doing it, just not my Bag of tricks.

If I had one made I would have by buddy do it in his shop, thats what they do. Ands if I go that route once I have the basic OEM style hood I would proably customize it add something like louvers or the turbo style scoop.... thats a lot of ifs...

Maybe if their was a genuine demand, It might be worth it to get a mold done and then make a few to recoupe the cost...

I just cant believe the prices, call it sticker shock... let alone wide body stuff... thats another nightmare or the turbo look conversions, just insane the prices are just insane.
