PCA Valuation report!!
Holy Crap... I didn't expect to see this. For a STOCK 1986 951, they claim upper value of $15,440, average at $11,130 and lower at $6,820. I was expecting numbers a full $3000 less than what this says. ****, hopefully that'll provide good incentive to the person who decides to buy my car.

The PCA valuation reports on our cars always sound a little high. Most 86 951s trade less than $10k (often a lot less) in the real world, but it's sure nice to have that paper in hand when showing the car to a prospective buyer.... YMMV Al

As written on the cover letter:
"The Valuation Committee of the PCA was established in 1979 to assist members in determining the value of older Porsches for the purpose of obtaining proper insurance coverage or for assistance in claims settlement."
It's not supposed to be a selling price point, but I'm sure as heck going to use it as one for those who don't know what the scoop is. Not that my price is going to change at all, but suddenly it looks like a sale (Mall Marketing ~ overinflate the paper value then discount deeply to hook prospective buyers). lol

Just hope the buyer has not been reading the Excellence market reports and comments for recent sales!
That PCA valuation form and LOTS of photos and documentation help in insurance issues. I'm sure it's a plus when you go to sell the car. Lots of buyers for 944 / 951 are pretty informed about the cars, so maintenance records, PPI's etc. all help to reduce uncertainty and improve buyer confidence.
Good luck Brian - let us know the outcome.
BTW, what is the mileage on your car? Looks pretty good from the photos.

Wow, perfect timing. This is EXACTLY the info I needed.
My insurance company (State Farm) says they will pay "cash value" should my 951 be stolen, totaled etc. "Cash value", according to Kelly Blue Book, is in the $6500 range. This is for a PERFECT 1988 951 with 43,000 miles. It is showroom condition. I'm considering selling for around $18,000 (I know, I know it sounds high but this car is worth it! And I'm really not that motivated to sell anyway). Contact me if youse guys want details on my car.
Anyway, I'm going to get a PCA valuation to protect my car should I need to make a claim.
$6500! Hmph!

I have not found a way to get someone to do a personal valuation on mine. I contacted PCA about it, and they sent me the standard form letter with the low, mid, and high values.
Anyone have an idea of how I get one specific to my car?

Perry 951 - check in the yellow pages / net search for an auto appraiser. Just make sure you get an independent guy not connected to YOUR insurance company (!). Ask for references, certification, experience, cost, and WHICH INSURNACE companies accept his / her appraisal.
I had my 1967 E Type appraised by an accredited guy 10 years ago for insurance purposes and was very pleased - $85,000 at that time for a JCNA 98+ pt show car. Well worth the $125 it cost. Very thorough too. Color photos, comparables, etc. Almost like a real estate appraisal.

Perry-
Bruce Anderson will do one for you for $150. Obviously he's not going to fly out and look at it in person but as a Porsche guru, Im sure his opinion probably carries as much weight as any. I almost had him do my 930 when negotiating on agreed value dollar figure.
Badger-
You may want to ask State Farm for an agreed value policy. I think theres also another name for it that the general (non collector) carriers call it. In any case, if its totaled or stolen, they give you X dollars where X is the agreed value both you and the carrier agreed to when the policy was written. You cant just make up any number though and wrap your car around a tree and collect a $100K agreed value on your 951. If you hand them an agreed value number thats just ridiculous they will not agree on it. Theres usually some reasonable flexibility however and if you wish to pay a little more on your premium they will usually raise it to your asking number if you are only arguing over 10-15% on the car.

Thanks UD but State Farm won't do an agreed value. I'm gonna check around and see if anyone will give me a policy for my 951. I'm not unreasonable. I mean, I think my car is worth $18,000 or so, but if it got totaled and they came back and said they'd pay out $16,000 I think I'd be ok with that. Not ok if they came back and said $6000.

I'm not to anxious to sell, so just waiting for the right buyer to drop on by and say "Hey, that's exactly what I was looking for. An 86 w/ Fuchs that isn't Red/Black/White and has never had a power mod." There's gotta be one of those guys out there somewhere.
