Need Harness Advice

I've searched a bit but there are so many options that it's probably going to take me a month to sort through it all.

I have Corbeau seats with holes for shoulder belts. I've ordered a Redline roll bar, and I want to get harnesess installed for DE events.

Are these road legal?

I do not want to be welding anything, and I'd prefer to avoid drilling. So bolt in is what I'm looking for.

I'm a big guy (300 pounds, 6' tall) is that matters in any way.

I'll be replacing the crummy Corbeau seat brackets with the better Planted ones so will have some opportunities to mount whatever I need.

Is 4 point still an option? It seems like this would be much more comfortable for my crotch. But as I sit in a reclined position so my helmet fits, I'm not sure this is the safest option.

A 5 point sounds like its going to need some custom holes made.

I hear 6 point is what most people recommend. But I don't know if that's for people with the roll bars.

If I go 6 point, do I always have to use the leg straps? Like when im driving on the highway to and from events?

Thanks for any help guys.

With safety devices, it quickly becomes a matter of all or nothing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Redline "rollbar" I'm aware of doesn't really work for rollover protection since it mounts to the seat belt mounting holes and the bolts will simply snap off or bend when the car lands on the roof. The only effective rollbar is one that mounts directly to the frame/body by either welding or bolting. There is a 4-point bar available that bolts in that has proper legs that intersect with the frame/body, but it requires drilling holes in your car to mount it.

So since it sounds like you'll essentially be running an expensive harness bar, I would suggest leaving the stock belt in place and using a CG-lock for the belt to help hold you snuggly in the seat. That way if the car does go over (it has happened) you can still bend over if necessary to get out of the way.

With a helmet, it is highly recommended you use a HANS-style device on the track, but that requires a full face helmet and typically it requires a full 5 or 6-point harness. Now there is a version that does not require a full harness to use, the Safety Devices R3: http://simpsonraceproducts.com/simpson/r3-sfi-approved/

There is some discussion here: https://rennlist.com/forums/racing-a...t-harness.html

A 5 or 6-point harness requires a better roll bar or a full cage with a seat back brace (if the seat isn't FIA certified) along with harness guides on the cage/harness bar. Proper seats come with holes for the harness straps. A 6-point harness splits the 5-points crotch harness into two, which is more comfortable and a little safer.

Hope this helps! I would discuss this with the technical directors of the groups you're considering running with as well, since they'll be signing off on your car and you don't want to be sent home because they failed the car or found out that you bought something you can't use.

In regards to your question about being road legal only 1 or 2 brands of harnesses are certified as being road legal. I think schroth may be one of them. FIA does not equal road legal, in other words.

To be "road legal" I believe it takes a DOT approvale and I think Schroth is one that has that approvale.

Yup, to stay road legal, you have to keep and use the stock belts.

When you're on the track either use a CG-lock with the stock belts or a properly installed harness.

Can I keep the stock belt and buckle in place if I'm installing a harness? I was wondering about that.

Yes. Either the lap belt for the harness will bolt to the stock lower two pickup points, or some of the seat adapters include a location for the lap belts.

However, I would read that link on proper harness installation so you can ensure the belts are at the proper angles as you may need to move the harness lap belt pickup points further forward (by drilling a hole and adding a steel backing plate that Schroth and others carry these to help with proper installation).
