Default Got Speakers, Need Opinion

I got my speakers today and I did a trial run with the fronts to see how the fitment was. The speakers are Alpine 4629P's. I had read after alot of searching that these would fit, but when i put them in the doors, they stuck out about a 1/4 inch. The magnet is not hitting the window track, so there aren't any issues there. They are plate speakers, so the actual plate itself is the 1/4" thats sticking out. The plates on the speakers are actually a little wider than the space between the upholstry on the door panel which makes them stick out a little too. I have heard of people using spacers to push out the door panel, but if the speaker doesn't fit inside the door panel cutout(not the metal frame but the actual upholstry part) how can you make the door panel bulge? If i let them stick out a 1/4" and put the stock grills over them, it doesn;t look to bad since the spakers have black plates, so i can live with that. This might be my only option. Anyone have any ideas? I got a few pictures to help explain this better.

I had a similar problem when I put new speakers on my ex 944 and I ended up putting the grills over them. Although that was the best money dependent solution at the time, I was pretty upset at the negative results it yielded. The grills would make full contact with the dash upon closing of the door leaving an imprint of the grilles and it's circular holes. It didn't look too bad...but it was kind of annoying. I wish I could offer a better solution but short of custom enclosures or cutting into the upholstery there doesn't seem to be a better solution.

it may be possible to cut the fiber board of the door panel to the exact speaker size, then glue some thin strips of wood to the back side of the door panel where the mounting holes would be, and then screwing the speakers to the wood... kinda risky though

The same thing happened to me when i bought my new speakers. Stuck out a little more than i liked. Rather than mess with it, i just sent them back. My old speakers didnt sound that bad anyways.

If you want the speaker all the way inside the door panel, you are going to have to cut one of them; The speaker or the door. Id say it would be easier to trim the sides of the speaker. And if you mess up, its a lot easier and cheaper to replace the speaker, than the door panel.

I had the same problem,my solution was to take out the drivers from the plate and fabricate my own plate,I used heavy ga sheet metal, from home depot, cost less than $10,screwed them into stock locations, they fit flush, and look complealty stock. And NO the dont vibrate or resonate.I did use locktight on all screws. Also for the tweeter mount I used Gorilla glue to hold it,the tweeter will never come loose with that glue!!!The sound was much improved, also added a sub 8 inch,Im very happy with results.

Will it not fit behind the door panel? IIRC, I did a pair of alpine's very similar to a buddy's car last year. They fit nicely behind the door panel. I'll see if I can get a hold of him and take a pic tonight.

The holes line up ok, its just that the plate doesn't fit inside teh upholstry cutout, its only missing by a hair, but just enough to make it not go completely in the hole. I was thinking maybe i'd get some different speaker grills. Does anyone know where I can get some that will fit without hitting the dash? I remember Perry951 had said somethign in a post I was reading that he had aftermarket grills. Perry, if you see this, what did you use? Anyone have pics of aftermarket grills installed?

Thanks
Mike

First of all, you should mount your speakers with the tweeter on top. With the tweeter at the bottom like that, the highs will get muffled more easily.

Second, what is not fitting? Are you saying that the plate of the speaker overlaps the edge of the upholstery? I don't think you can do anything about that other than trim the speaker plate down with a dremel or something.
I don't even notice that mine stick out a bit anymore, so I don't think it's worth bothering with.

Yea, thats problem #1, but also I have to figure out what i'm gonna do about grills. I caould live with the stock ones sticking out a 1/4", but if I can find nice aftermarket ones I will probbaly go with that.
