Factory specifications are maximum 0.16 mm end play, maximum 0.42 mm radial play on turbine (hot) side. "About 1/32 inch" doesn't sound like it was measured with a dial micrometer, but would translate to about 0.8 mm. If your turbo has 1/32 inch end play, you may have found your problem.
