Default Clay Bar is Amazing!

I just spent the last 3 hrs clay barring my 951. I used step 1 of the meguiars system (the paint cleaner) last night. I am so happy with the results so far that I thought i would let the world know and recommend the bar to anyone who may be on the fence about using one.

I clay barred the hood first and then put my hand in a ziplock bag like auto-pia said to do and rubbed my hand over an un-barred fender and then the barred hood... The difference was amazing Later this afternoon I will polish and then wax using the M. crystal polish and then Gold Class. I will be sure to post the results.

Where should the clay bar be used in the cleaning process? I was thinking of getting a claybar to use also.

Im thinking its

1. wash car
2. clay bar
3. wax/polish

Also, is it used as a mini buffing wheel...to smooth out the finish, or is it used as a compound, to remove stains, etc?

In other words, do you clay bar the entire car, or just areas you want to clean?

Also, any idea if the Alpine White color is a clear-coat color, or what?

Andy, you clay bar the entire car.
Alpine white is not a clear coat color. I think just the metallics were.

How ya likin' the S2. I'm lovin' mine.

1. Wash car
2. Clay bar (but you have to use a medium like Griot's Speed Shine or Meguiar's Final Inspection for lubrication)
3. Meguiar's #3 (hand or electric polisher application)
4. Apply wax as usual
5. Buff

How do you do it? In a swirling motion, or more of a rubbing back and forth each area? My car is in dire need of a clay barring if it works as good as everyone says.

Spray on the speed shine, then run the bar over it.
Work in a front to back motion only. No swirling! Make sure you fold the clay regularly to keep the contaminants off the paint. A bar should last about 7 cars.

The clay bar is a cleaning agent so you should prob do it after a good wash and paint cleaner... It seems to remove a lot of deposits from the paint. I did rubbing back and forth, circular motion, whatever I felt like I guess.

My alpine white (im thinking original paint cause it still has pin-stripe that goes around the vehicle) has a clear coat... I know this cause it is coming off in some areas. I was also wondering if there is a good method to smooth out where the clear coat is chipping away and the paint that is beneath.

I got started removing the adhesive from the worn out P-O-R-S-C-H-E decal above the rear bumper about 20 min ago. Fun stuff...

I have to say the clay bar is the best addition to my waxing supplies in a long time, I had a lot over spray on my VW and it has cleaned up most of the paint, I have some more work to do this weekend on it. But it is amazing what you can do with the clay bar, a good polish, and good wax....

I think i'm going to try that Zaino Bro's stuff on the 965 next week, just to see how it stacks up....

Are you sure Alpine is a clear coat? I remember reading that the standard colors weren't clear coat paint. I could be wrong.

I'm going to remove the P-O-R-S-C-H-E decal too along with the stoneguards and a pinstripe. It should make for lots of fun.
When I removed the pinstripe on my old car I found that a little lighter fluid on a rag took the adhesive right off.

From what I have heard it is not only the metallic paints which are "dual stage", i.e.: Base coat and clear coat. One 911 I was looking at was a brick red color (not metallic) but it was definitely clear-coated as the clear coat was coming off in handfuls!

Tom

P.S.: This is a terrible thread: Now I want to clay bar my paint this weekend instead of drive!

Yup, the ronson brand of lighter fluid is the best for dissolving adhesives.

here is a question i posted last week that is on topic.

i bought a waxmaster wool-like polishing bonnet.

it is a waxmaster high gloss polishing bonnet, it says "dry polish to a deep long lasting shine...."

when is that supposed to be used?

anyone use the wool like bonnet on their orbital poliasher?

Pete- I love the way the S2 actually accelerates when you hit the gas! Noticeably more torque, and way better brakes! I'm just not crazy about the rims (D90's).

I think guards red is the only non-clear coat color...from what everyone says.

I'm actually starting to like the D-90's. They're a lot easier to clean than white Fuch's! I painted the crests today and that makes them look a little fancier.
