Save more $ and get a really nice 951. I've driven Boxters and while they're a nice car in their own right, they won't give you nearly the thrills of a nicely modded 951. But unless you have a workshop and can do almost everything yourself, you'd be better off saving until you had at least $7k-$10k and you'll get something really nice.

I bought a good 951. I paid 12,500 for a 29,000 mile car and my first repair bill was 3600 beans 10 years ago. Since then. I spend about 500-1000 a year in maintenance. Haven't had any problems though. Just routine maintenance belts, fluids, etc.... At this point from working on both and owning a 951, there'll always be a 951 in my collection

Buy sport leather seats and enjoy the car you have until you collect more money for faster car. You can swap the seats later to new car.

+1
Just saving up a bit more and spending a little extra is definitely the way to go. Find a nice sorted example and enjoy less headaches.

I was in the same boat several weeks ago and settled on the 951. The advantage you have over me is that you already know the ins and outs of the 944. I did not so buying the 951 will be a step up for you...in both complexity and fun factor. So ask yourself if you are looking for an "upgrade" to what you currently have get the 951 or if you want a "different" car that probably has a different driving experience get the Boxter.

I bought my Boxster used (~ 30K miles) and traded it at ~ 90K. It didn't have a lot of top end, but it made some really nice noise and open top motoring is hard to beat. My first Porsche was a 914. My second was the Boxster. I always felt that when Porsche made another mid-engine, it would be worth a shot. Engine access on the Boxster sucks. In buying a car thats gonna likely need some wrenching you will be taking the harder road. Like volunteering to hike with a few extra bricks in your knapsack.

How about a Boxster with a modded 951 engine?
