Default Dumb Question

Hey guys,

I know this is really dumb question, but on the battery, how do I tell which is the neg/pos terminal? The negative one is the one with the wires going towards the engine, correct?

-Thanks
Mike

the negative will be black and will have short wire runs going to the body of the car, engine block and other ground points

the positive will be red and have wires going to the alternator, fuse box, the starter and probably a few other high-draw things (like an iceshark light kit ).

btw, in my car the negative side is closer to the engine (positive closer to the windshield), but I wouldn't use that as a guide since it might be possible to put it in backwards.

The negative side will have a minus (-) by the post and the positive side will have a (+) by the positive terminal. The negative is grounded to the chasis. the positive goes to the alternator. If you have colored wires the red is positive and the black is negative.

If you take a wrench and touch one end to the body of the car, and the other end to one of the terminals, and you see lots of sparks, then you know that you just melted a perfectly good wrench. Wait, what was the question again?

And maybe if there is enough hydrogen gas from the battery, the battery may blow up and spray you with concentrated sulfuric acid and melt more than your hand away..... moral of the story, do not arc weld with your battery intentionally.
