Default Symptoms of bad Power Steering Rack?

I am noticing extremely rough steering in my 86'. My mechanic told me several weeks ago that the rack was loose. Could someone please explane the symptoms of a bad rack so I don't spend 500 USD on something that is not broken.

Thank you
Chrsitian

if its bad you might notice no power steering.

but seriously, mine had a leak and one side had power steering and the other didn't. Personally i didn't think power steering was worth 500 bucks plus the time it would take to put it in, plus the 60 for allignment or whatever.....so i just yanked it. i keep my eyes open for a cheap rack but honestly i dont mind the no power steering, you get used to it.

I wouldn't mind it if it was even. MY problem is that some spots in the steering are okay, and others require two hands on the wheel to turn the wheel.

power steering fluid full? Could be a slipping belt.
