Cracked Windshield

Cracked Windshield
This isn't a BMW board but you guys always have the best help and advice.
The windshield on my 525 has a crack near the top. I want to prevent it from spreading any further and I heard that putting some clear nail polish on it will help.
Can anyone confirm this or does someone have alternate ideas?

I'd go with some thin cyanoacrylate. The thin stuff flows like water, and will seep into most cracks, curing inside and providing some protection against growth or extension of the crack. Ultimately, whatever you use will probably be a losing battle, and you are only delaying the inevitable.

Depending on how large the crack is, some proffesionals are able to permanantly stop them. I would call around to some windshield installers/ repairers in the area and get some prices and more information.

Shaun go down to Autobahn in El Cajon... kinda close to Anderson motorworks, and talk to Shaun or John there.... they I am sure have plenty replacement windshields for your car.... they will give you a damn good deal on it too.... can never beat autobahn for used parts.....

I don't need to replace the whole thing.
It's about a 2 inch crack at the very top of the windshield in the middle. You can't see the crack from inside or outside the car because its right where the rear view mirror is and that blocks the view of it. I just need something to stop it.

I usually have a local auto glass outfit do the "repair" and it is amazing how well it turns out. They basically use a diamond drill to relieve the stress point at the very end of the crack, and then fill it with a clear adhesive which they activate with UV light.
I had a deep rock chip in the top of my 951 WS, and after the repair, I cannot even find it! It was quite noticeable before. Check your comprehensive cover - it might allow for these repairs without deductible.

Actually, looking at their webpage, it seems they always have more wrecked BMWs than Porsches to part out...

I have called them several times for Porsche parts, and struck out.

You win some and you lose some..... it all depends on what they have at the moment.... for instance, I knew that they had a 944 that they got in one day, i go the next trying to get the floormats... they were already gone.... u have to just get lucky sometimes....

There are mobile windshield repair guys out there that will repair the 2 inch crack professionally. Personally, I would go down to pep boys and buy one of their windshield repair kits using a seringe. Its cheap and it worked well for me before.
