Default Starter issue

Hey guys I read a thread that sounded really similar to my problem but there was no conclusion. So here is my scenario. I am wrapping up a clutch replacement. The car started fine before I began and now the fuel pump turns on when I turn the key but the starter doesn't do anything. I can hotwire the starter and get the car running but I don't know what to check. I don't remember taking any wires off apart from the starter wires, grounds and sensors. I can't figure out what changed.

Wiring damaged?

FRWilk posted a DIY "Remote Starter" TIP for the early cars.
http://www.frwilk.com/the944/remote.htm

The late cars use a slightly different connector but the location is the same.

Just an idea.

make sure you connected the small wire from the ignition switch to the correct terminal.

I'm sure the wires are on the right places. once it's not minus 40 here i'll go scrub the connection points with scotch bright or something.

Thanks for the reply.
If another problem with the starter happens, check the brushes.
I have used this DIY to repair a couple.
