OK, found what I was thinking about on my original comment (still trying to get shoe out of my mouth)... refer to this link and my reference to your comment about the 0-85 thing (confused yet???)

Just to set some things straight from this post:

Even a non modded non S turbo - with an abused launch - would whip an S2 up to 60mph and beyond. S2 is just easier to launch but is ultimately slower than the turbo in every aspect!

S = crap! It has lower low end torque than a NA 944! I have driven both - this car was a Porsche's **** up!

Why no turbo S2? Porsche toyed around with this but there was no benefit. With turbo charged cars air intake is not a problem. You don't need extra valves (16V) you just increase the boost!

A little tough on the NA cars aren't you Simon?
And I think there is a benefit of a turbo S2 seeing as they put 295 on the tires at just 6 psi. That's what half a STOCK 951s boost? And that's more power than some 951s put down at like 20 psi.

And an S2 is not slower than a turbo in every aspect if the thing is stock. I just never see it happen. Try running a stock 951 (non S) on the track...I eat them in the corners because I have within 5 hp of them and constant always-on power. Can you say exit speed? On the straights they catch up but don't "blow by" me. Man do I get tired of hearing that they will....Only non-stock ones do.

Everybody knows the turbos are the fastest 944s but you people seem to be hung up on making sure nobody ever thinks any of the others are fast at all. Tell that to the Z28s I eat alive having half their motor...I don't even have a turbo on my 4 banger.

Talking stock vs stock it's pretty well known that an S2 is a better all around car than a turbo is. Same brakes/suspension just a different motor that makes almost as much power without the turbo..a much more useable powerband. All it takes is a couple hundred bucks to make a turbo spank an S2...nobody argued that.

When you get into big $$ mods I'd build a 3.0L S2 motor and destroy...a la Dfastest951..that's gotta be nuts! If you're going to be replacing things like a bigger turbo/intercooler, air/fuel management etc it doesn't make a difference starting with a 951 motor since you're replacing all the stuff it comes with anyways.

I have a 944S and have driven a 968,S2 and a turbo before buying my car and I think this all depends on what condition you find any of the 4. The 968 seemed the worst of the 4 because it was not taken care of.The S2 seemed the fastest off the line? That being said there are not many S2 offered in my area and most of the Turbos had been driven hard.I purchased the S because it had low miles and a great body/interior.I figured I could improve on the engine/performance but wanted something to be proud of to drive.
What can be done to narrow the gap on you other guys in the way of performance?I agree they are short on launch but are fun to run in 3rd for 4k to 6k rpm

I think not man sorry I have been in both. An S maybe but those are the heaviest off all 944s.

My problem is: there aren't too many stock turbos to play with on the track! (At least in the DE's I've attended!) The modified 951's are difficult to keep up with for me, since I've still got pretty much everything stock (motor, suspension..etc).

Back to the original question: I believe the 944S2 is hands down much faster than a 944S. However, given the right modifications (ie Suspension), the 944S can be a great track car!

True that Z. Very few turbos are still stock so they usually kill...but I've had the opportunity to play with a couple that had similar suspension mods to me and the stock motor...Wow turbo guys that mod the suspension first??
I talked to one of the guys I passed and he didn't even know what an S2 was. Not uncommon I guess for that to happen.. He was impressed but I surely am not the better driver!

What's funny is the first DE I did, my instructor thought my car was a turbo S until the second day when he asked me where my boost guage was! I was like uhh..I wish I had one! He drives a really fast turbo too...I took that as a compliment!

The straights where you get up over 85 the turbos are quicker no doubt. But up to that through the corners it's fun battling them..run up on them in the corner exits and then try to keep enough momentum so they don't catch you on the straights...

I can't wait till my next DE so some more modded turbos can blow by me! But there's nothing more intimidating than being flat out at 120 and see my dad in his stock 993TT come blow by me like I'm not moving!

Simon that comment you made regarding the 944S puts you in my a$$clown category. In no way is my 944S slower than our 86 944. Both are very strong running cars, but there is an obvious difference in speed. As for on a track, I watched a local racer take a bone stock 914 2.0 liter rust-bucket out to the track and shut every single one up. He held FTD. It shows that horsepower and boost mean squat without driving skill.

It is worse when a 924S with only suspension mods blows by you! (Al P. on this board was the culprit!)

On the other hand, there is something very gratifying about getting a pass signal from a Cup Car!

Not to hijack this thread, but, when's your next DE? I'm going to The Glen in two weeks! Can't wait!

I wanna drive at the Glen...It's such a great track in GT Racing 2002!
My next one will be maybe Sebring in September and Roebling Road in October is what I'm planning on. Although maybe just one I dunno if I can afford the tires to do both!
