Default new to porsche

Hey everyone, i recently just purchased my, new to me, 83 944. I was looking around in it and in the trunk under the carpet on the right side is some sort of smaller rechargeable battery. is this supposed to be there or did someone put it in there?

thanks for the help!

Welcome, pictures.

Some Euro 944's had the main battery there, opposite side to the fuel filler. If there is a battery tray welded in there you might have an early black market import. They came out in 82 in Europe.

Edit: just saw the pictures, so not a black market import its a US spec 83 and that battery was added by a po.

Definitely not stock/OEM.

What is it connected to?

Flux capacitor?

welcome.

I have a slightly different thread title suggestion:

I've just become the 6th owner of this 31 year old thing with a Porsche badge.

and she looks like a serious candidate for V8 Detroit muscle.

lol v8 swap would be awesome! for now though, making sure it doesnt fall apart when i drive down the road is the priority haha. Im not sure what it is connected to, it has some wires running to it, one which is red and im thinking thats the one that charges it. I dont think its anything to important seeing how the whole car is stock. i guess we will see if the flux capacitor fails when im driving to work tomorrow haha.

can you follow the wiring? you have no battery in the front? otherswise it could be a battery back up for an alarm or for a separate sound system.

the battery was mounted in the back left for 86< 944 RHD models to offset the driver. they were still in the front for early RHD 944's.

Welcome , That battery looks like some aftermarket rigged item that you can delete. Make sure that sunroof drain tube exits the body there.

I have a battery under the hood. The car may have an alarm but nothing that im aware of as of now. Today after work ill follow the wiring and see where it leads. The battery does seem to be quite old.

Ill make sure the hose drains properly, i do get a little water in there from the leaking window hatch though, which is on my list to fix this weekend.

Welcome! No idea what that thing is, it's just an empty compartment on my car.
