Default 87' turbo vs 88 turbo s

I have read all over looking for answers to the question (including clark's garage and other on line pub types) is there a difference in the engine, other than the turbo and computers, on an 87' turbo versus an 88' turbo s?

I understand that the brakes, suspension, turbo and dme/klr, transmission are different, but I am basically wondering about the differences in the crank cam block and head.

I can't say, but all the information you need is here. http://www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf...88_KATALOG.pdf

The engines are essentially the same. I've heard stories that the '88 turbo S engines were built on a different production line (that did the race cars) and *perhaps* there was a little more care in matching parts... But I don't know if that's true.

There are some chassis differences between the S and non S, along with standard vs optional items, like ABS, air bags, split rear seats, LSD, tranny cooler, etc.

I believe the only difference is that the s "may" have larger valves. I have also heard many late turbos and s cars did not have the forged rods that the early cars have.

large valve stems perhaps, that's debatable.

That is all I've ever heard, but it's never been substantiated. Altho someone did say that there were two valve part numbers, and one was superseded.

If I remember right the "S" cars have sodium filled exhaust valves.

Only difference in the M51 vs M52 valve/heads I can find in PET is the valve stem seals. I used to think there was a tolerance diffence in the exhaust valve stem diameter, but I can't find it when looking for documentation on it now.
