Default Sputtering after a few minutes

I recently lightly restored an 87 944. I replaced the timing belt/gear/tensioner, head gasket, and some other stuff. The car runs pretty good now. The only real issue is how it runs at the beginning of the day.

It starts up fine and runs fine for about 3-6 minutes. After that it begins to sputter sometimes. If I'm driving it cuts out power (but doesn't stall) and I can limp it to the side of the road. If it's standing still it just acts like it's about to stall for a couple minutes then revs up a bit then runs fine for the rest of the day.

It seems after it's little fit it runs fine after that. Sometimes it feels like the power is hindered during normal driving, but not too noticeable. Like it's not giving 100% but almost.

It has 185k+ miles so I'm going to do the fuel filter regardless.

Just wanted to get a second opinion to see if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks!

P.S. When I bought this car it wasn't running and sat for at least a year with the fuel cap off. That's what lead me to believe the fuel filter was compromised.

Could be the filter, yes. Could be the dme relay too.

Already ordered one. I am hoping that's that problem. That's the last serious problem with this car.

Don't forget to change the screen inside the fuel tank too.
