Default How do I clean the top deck of the block?

What the subject says. The guy at the machine shop told me to use chemical gasket remover to soften up the gunk, then use a putty knife to scrape the gunk off. After its all clean, go over it with 800-1000 grit sandpaper lightly with a sanding block. Does this sound good? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

keep the rolac grinder away from the machined surfacrs. go slow, very slow and smooth with the sander. even strokes, even pressure. no 1000th of an inch waves.

I softened it up with gasket remover first by leaving it for a few hours. Then it came off pretty easily with a gasket scraper (razor blade attached to a tool). I found the scraper at the local automotive store. Good luck, and be sure to clean it off real well.

I'd spray the gasket remover onto a rag and brush it on .. that stuff loves to do weird things to aluminum .. the rest I'd do with a big block and some high grit .. at least that's what I did.

I used the gasket scraper/remover method without any problem. Also, get yourself a can of copper spray for head gaskets. Lay up a thin coat on each side of the head gasket before you reinstall and the copper spray will take up any imperfections. Tip was given to me courtesy of Dan at Guru racing.
