I had something simular but at 4800. There was a broken wire where one of the reference sensors hooked up.
From what I gathered you should be able to unplug one and it should stay running. If you disconnect one and the car dies then the one that is still connected is bad. I don't know this for sure but kind of the jist of what I picked up.

Thought I would try and finalize this thread.
That new TPS worked great for a few weeks then it went right back to not reving past 2k.
So fast forward.
I start the car the other day to see if it was still acting up. (It worked sometimes, but mostly the car was not driveable) Sure enough it won't rev past 2k. I then pulled off the tps connector and started the car. Sure enough it rev'd just fine.
Ok, so I pull the intake apart to get at the TB and TPS. I cleaned it all up with some brake cleaner and electrical cleaner on the the TPS connectors.
I found a spare TPS and was going to swap it just for laughs, but when I pulled the new tps off the tb, water/solvent poured out. I'm not really sure what it was, but it was full of liquid. I'm not sure if it was from me spraying contact cleaner on the pin connector, but how could the unit fill up with contact cleaner or worse how could water have gotten in there?
I shook the liquid out of the tps, and blasted the opening where the TB shaft would go with compressed air, reasembled and was able to drive the car. I took it out for a longer drive with no issues. I'm going to start driving it again and see if the symptoms come back. I was starting to think it was the TPS wiring getting damaged due to the extreme cold during the winter but now I'm not too sure. This sure is pointing to a tps issue. At least I have new reference and speed sensors, o2 sensor, temp sensor, new plugs, wires, fuel filter, fuel regulator, and cleaned flow tested injectors with new seals..... uhhg
Some items where due to be changed anyways, so it was not that bad...paying a shop to do all the work was not as much fun.
I'll post another update after I start driving it again. At least winter is over here.

Got some more driving in, and it started to act up again. I could rev it in neutral past 2k rpm (this has happened in the past, but mostly when it acts up, it will not rev beyond 2k no matter what i do). It would cut out when accelerating in gear at 2k rpm. Same as before.
Last night I checked the tps and the tps wiring to the dme using the Clarks Garage guide, and it all checked out as described in the manual. I recleaned the connections, installed the tb back in the car and buttoned it all back up and took it for a drive. All is good, and the car drove normally.
Electrical gremlins I am thinking. I'm going to clean all my battery connections next and add another ground wire as I did in my other 944.

Did you verify the wiring & TPS when hot?
I've had this exact failure happen in my 951, but would only happen once the wiring harness heated-up...

I replaced the New never installed TPS I bought with another new never installed TPS, and the car has been fine ever since. I have a few weeks of no issue driving under my belt, even some longer drives..sheesh...what a pain, just to replace a new TPS with another new TPS and all is good again.
