1992 968
I know this topic has been beaten to death but, I just bought 92 it has 118k body, paint interior near flawless, this car runs like a top. I have owned many 944's never a 968. In fact I have a 951 on its way.
So here is the issue rear end is screaming my though with this many miles the pinion bearing must have been changed by now? Or not. Checked the trans gear oil looks clean, I'm going to change it anyway. The odd thing is the rear is yelling at 10mph. You all have much more experience with this model than I.
Is there any other issues that could be causing this? Of course I will check the wheel bearings.
Any help would be appreciated.
Ohh merry Xmas I hope mine isn't going to cost 3k

Sounds like pinion bearings. Was is making the noise when you bought it? If it is the bearings Auto Sport in Florida has a low mile non-LSD 6 speed for $1800 with a warranty. It could be axle bearing but I would be surprised.
Good luck!

A friend had his 968's pinion bearing fixed at like 120k, and it's howling again at 160k. Those things can go bad without warning, and if not fixed well, will fail again. He had his fixed at a very reputable shop!
