S2 Late Model Spoiler vs Black Rubber Spoiler
#18
So is there any reason other than appearance why Porsche switched from the rubber spoiler to the wing for the '91 S2 and all the 968's? Like, does the wing make the car more stable at high speed or something?

i would have done it at the beginning when i was restoring the car, unfortunately i realized i could do the swap AFTER tinting the windows. it's very cool indeed, but not worth paying to get that hatch tinted again, apparently it's a hassle for whoever does the labor and they charged me an arm and a leg...with lifetime warranty for what it's worth.

Yes, it does have a bit of function to it, as opposed to being a cosmetic change. It channels the air in such a way as to create a higher speed flow across the top of the back of the car, creating an "excavating force" that puts measureable downward force on the car at speeds above 45-48 mph. This is taken from a factory document discussing the bridge spoiler for the S2. You can see the difference in flow if you follow both a '91 S2 and a earlier model S2 or turbo in a light rainstorm.
Thanks for the heads up that the bridge spoiler is still for sale. I have a wrecked one from a 968 that I was afraid I was going to have to repair and fab some side pieces for. I will be ordering the 944racing kit very soon.
