Default R12 Adapter for A/C?

I'm a little confused here. I have some R12(yes I am certified and bought it legally). I'm trying to charge the system from the low side port on the bottom side of the compressor but I can't seem to get the hose to thread properly. I've now stripped 2 cheap hose fittings with no luck. Is there an adapter fitting that I'm missing? The threads appear to be in good shape on the compressor side.

Default I can't do it either

I purchased hose with R12 fittings, and I can't get the darn thing connected to the low side port. It looks as if the alternator is getting in the way. Has anyone been able to find an alternative, i.e. angled fitting? If so, can you please share with us how you've done it? It's hot here in CA and I long for a cold A/C.

Yeah, its strange....i've got the same hose connector(yellow). It doesn't seem to want to thread on there. It looks like the right thread pitch/count but it just won't tighten. I don't want to attach to the high side for fear of blowing up a can so I'm unable to charge at this point.
