Clunking noise from left rear when warm

I have a 1987 944s with LSD factory transmission. It has 47250 original miles. I have a "clunking noise" that seems to follow the wheels and is most noticeable at low speeds. The noise goes away when the clutch is pressed. When the car is in gear I can minimize the noise by accelerating lightly. The noise appears to minimize and "go away" at high speeds. The mechanic put it on a lift and it did not make any noises. It shifts perfect and runs perfect. I had him change the transmission and diff fluid and he used 75w90 synthetic GL-4. The car drove fine for 10 miles then made the noise again. NO METAL in the case when drained.
He check the CVs and Exhaust and said all is OK.
Thoughts?

I had something like that in my 87 turbo. I changed the right rear axle and thought it fixed the problem, but started hear it again. So I checked the axles again and they didn't have much play but when you took the left axle and pushed it towards the wheel it would make the knocking noise. The outer CV joint had come apart. I changed out the axle and now qiet and less vibration in the car
