Default New 951 Owner, Suggestions?

Hey all,
First time p-car owner, but after owning the car just 6 hours I am already in love. The girlfriend is already jealous!!!

Anyway I have been reading a bunch of FAQ's, but still have a couple of questions for you all:

#1) The car is a '86 944T(951) and is Guards Red, and has 123300 miles on the clock. Here is what has been replaced within 10,000 miles:

- New Clutch
- Rebuilt Turbo
- New Water Pump
- New timing belt(3,000 miles ago)
- Camshaft seals

The car was driven by the PO around 3,000 miles last year, what do you suggest I replace in the foreseable future? Is the timing belt still ok, or should I have it looked at since the car has not really been driven that much.

#2) The interior is in showroom condition(literally). What needs to be done to keep it that way? What leather treatment products do you suggest. The dash is currently uncracked, will treating it with armour all prevent any future cracking?

Thanks for the insight.

Say no to Armor All or anything else with silicone in it. Check out the Zaino Brother's products and good leather conditioners.

Do you know if the PO had the timing belt re-tensioned after 1,500 miles. That's the recommended break in period for the belt. If the belt is 3000 miles old it should be fine.

Where do you usually find these products? Local auto store, or is this an online item?

No, I am not sure if the belt was re-tensioned. It was replaced roughly 1 year ago(about 3,000 miles ago).

I will be taking the car to a mechanic shortly to make sure that the belt is properly tensioned.

Thanks,

Jonas,
I am pretty sure that my local car store will not have the aforementioned products, and their is no official porsche dealer in town.

Can someone recommend a reputable online retailer for the above products? Thank you.

NAPA sells the Lexol leather conditioning/preservation products, as do a lot of other auto parts stores.

John,
Thanks for the quick reply...... I will have a look around the local stores today and see what I can find.

Also, in terms of using synthetic oil, what is the common consensus amount 951 owners? Should I just stick with the factory recommended, or should I go with Mobil 1, or another synthetic?

Thanks for answering all my questions :-).

for Lexol products, www.paragon-products.com if you call them ask fro Jason, he has a great reputation here, as many of us buy products from him. Congrats on the new ride, welcome to the boost!

You might have the timing belt just checked for tension unless the PO can verify that it has been. Enjoy the car, keep a check on the forums, get a budget together for some upgrades as you go....$$ can add up quickly and the boost is addictive.
LOL,,I have a friend who just bought an 86 too, he has already dropped $$ for SFR complete s.s. exhaust, he lives in Corpus Christi TX where Paragon is located so - He has also done new Koni's all around, new 968 sway bars, new rotors and pads, ss brake lines, and new wheels and tires from TireRack. He has only had the car a week! He is talking to Dave Lindsey about turbo, head, injectors, MAF, and Danno at Guru for software.

Most of us use synthetic oils, I think. I use Mobil 1, 5W30 in winter and 15W50 in summer. Some people who switched from dino oil to synthetics report oil leaks developed (because the synthetics are more slippery...?), but I never had that problem as I've used synthetics since almost new.

Lexol for leather and Vinylex for your dash and rubber parts. You can pick these up at Pep Boys or any other national chain. Also, if you don't already have a sunshade for the windshield go out and buy one and use it all the time. As far as oil, I use Mobil 1 15w50 and have had no problems at all.

For the paint I use P21S body shampoo for the washes and P21S wheel cleaner for the wheels. Many people on here use the P21S wax, Zaino, Blitz, or Klasse waxes, I personally haven't tried any of these, but have the Blitz on order. Check out www.carcareonline.com for some good cleaners.
