How hard is it to replace the ball joints on my 86 944 na? It has the aluminum arms.

If you purchase the bushings kit from www.rennbay.com it takes literally 1 hour (per side) to complete. The longest part of the job is waiting for epoxy to dry. For the job you don't need much as far as tools go:
13mm, 17mm, 19mm wrench and sockets.
Vice
Needle-nosed pliers
Small screw-driver
Torque-wrench

Thats pretty much all I used. All you're replacing is the upper and lower bushings inside the joint, surrounding the ball. My upper was no longer a bushing...just pieces :-). Made a popping noise when the wheel made up and down movement.

Good luck, it was one of the most satisfying jobs I've done on the car (saved me 400 dollars for an A-Arm!)

Again a thanks goes out to Rennbay!

I was under the impression that the n/a cars have steel a-arms. Anyway, there used to be a thread on the replacement for AL a-arms and a link for the step by step procedure. (When are we getting the search feature again?) I just purchased some rebuild kits from KLA Industries today. I will have to tell you Monday.

I was under the impression that all 86+ 944's have aluminum control arms.

85.5 cars received the aluminum control arms and aluminum trailing arms. A few very early 85.5 cars had aluminum control arms and steel trailing arms.

Glad you like them. What made me even look into producing the kits is that about a year ago I let a ball joint go to the point that it busted out the top of the arm. Needless to say the drivers side tire went wild with it no longer attached to the arm... at about 60. It was not as bad as one would think but it scared the hell out of me. No fender or suspension damage , just a scary time trying to stop.

They are in stock and ready to ship. The tutorial on rennbay is awesome and was put together by Adrial. If anyone wants to send in a few pics of the process while they are doing it I would be happy to put them in there.
