Default Parts car purchase

There is a 1984 944 with no title available in my area for $700. Only a couple exterior pictures, but it looks like it has 15" Fuchs and the ad says it runs but overheats. I could use quite a few little random things for my car that would add up to big money and a lot of hassle to find, but what big things should I look for on a parts car in order to get some money out of it?

I know you read these forum posts so if you get out your calculator and start adding up the stuff people are constantly replacing, you'll get a value in short order of what's possible. Wheels, interior and environmental controls, engine components, glass, lights, suspension, etc. It adds up pretty quick. Ebay will give you a fairly good idea on what each part can sell for.

Only issue is if you have a place to store a 4 wheel salvage yard.

you will get your $ back almost immediately from reselling the Fuchs wheels if my experience is any guide.

If the hatch is in good shape that would just about cover your purchase cost as well.

I think my plan will be to buy the car and swap the interior pieces and body panels I need, then try to sell off everything but the Fuchs. If I can break even without selling the wheels, I would love to keep them. The car would be a good lemons racer if someone wanted it whole as well.

I've bought many a parts cars. Anytime I would see one with Fuchs for sub $1000 I would try to buy it.

A few years ago i could get 800-1000 for NA Fuchs and would usually make my money back on those alone. Part the car, sell stuff off, keep some for myself. Bought myself many other cars and toys just from selling/trading up Porsche parts.

One thing to keep in mind is after you part it out - how much will it cost you to get rid of the rest? Will a salvage yard take a car without a title in your state?

Thanks for bringing this up, I didn't know this was an issue. Does anyone have any insight into how this works in Maryland? The good news is that my 944 driver is the same year and color so that might make things easier if I can just show them a copy of my registration for that car.

You just might need the correct title for the chassis you want to get rid of.

I've sold car shells on ebay for 99 cents - it makes them disappear. If there was no other way, just cut the shell apart and recycle it. you don't need a title for scrap metal.

I agree. Better yet, I would show up with $500 cash in one pocket and $200 cash in the other. Pull out the $500 and offer it for the car. Only if he doesn't take the 5 would I pull out the other 2. It has been my experience if you show a seller cash in hand the price drops more often than not.

I have gone through four 944 parts cars. You end up keeping more than you think you will. I have 3 trannys sitting on the floor of my shop now.

By keeping the Fuch wheels it will probably take you a little while to get your money back. Then again, the overheating issue might be something simple. If you get the engine straight it would sell to a 944 track guy fairly quick for say $250 to $300 bucks.

Good luck,

Michael

If this is the white one with no title, I saw that ad on CL. If I were closer I would have picked it up as the Fuchs wheels are worth it.

Checked it out today. The body panels I need are in good shape. Tires are completely toast. No dents in the Fuchs, with OEM center caps on all four wheels. Interior is faded but not abused, dash is cracked to hell. Rear hatch seems okay with surprisingly nice rubber, but it might have had the frame reattached in the past. A/C is present and it has cruise control. Has the option code for leather sport seats but those must have been swapped out at some point, that would have been killer. Looks like it is probably a good deal but it is definitely not driveable due to the tires so I'll have to make arrangements for a trailer. If anyone is interested in pieces feel free to PM me, once I have the car I will pay my dues to become a member and start a sale thread.

Holy crap, just checked out the option codes again and the Fuchs are factory Grand Prix White (I assumed someone had just painted them to match the car at some point) and it has the M220 LSD.
