Default Are these symptoms of a bad oil pressure sender unit?

As soon as I start the car, pressure gauge jumps to ~4 bar, doesn't move whatsoever. RPMs, oil temp, etc... doesn't matter, it's stuck and tapping the gauge does nothing.

Shut off engine, gauge goes back to zero (so gauge itself is not stuck).

Crank back up, and it works as though nothing was wrong. It almost alternates between working fine and being stuck at 4bar. Any info would be great, and any suggestions to avoid a $45 part would be even better

As you're probably aware, on start-up of a cold engine, the oil pressure should go to max range on the gauge and then after the car heats up, it should typically run betweet about 2 and 4. Are your symptoms noted on a cold engine or warm engine?

Cold. But it jumps to 4, and never comes back down to ~3.5 when it warms up. It's frozen on 4. When it works correctly, it starts nearly at 5. So it's clearly a malfunction.

Isn't that the same thing as the sender? AFAIK it's one composite unit
